Title: Managing product variants in a component-based system

Host: Anna Stĺhl and Jacob Gradén, LTH

We will present and discuss some ideas from our master's thesis - "Managing product variants in a component-based system". Working with components to produce variants of configurations has several benefits, but also introduces a lot of complexity which must be managed. This complexity arises from space, time and variability - different components, their versions, and the configuration variants to be created.

We propose managing some of this complexity and promoting creation of configuration variants by introducing a support tool - in essence, to hide the complexity inside the tool. A support tool can assist in the creation of different configurations and use rules which allow for, for example, calculating the properties of a configuration based on the properties of its constituent components.
